Newly married couple wants to relocate from San Francisco to Marin and maintain a short commute and big view on a strict budget.
Sausalito is the obvious choice, but finding a decent house with a good view for a reasonable price is difficult. After speaking with several of the local Sausalito architects, a property emerges (not on the MLS) that could be purchased for a low price but it is a flag lot with the building site located 150 feet below the street.
Site is purchased with panoramic Bay view for $105,000. Legacy Builders creates a design that includes a respectable yard and a hotel quality hillside elevator made of glass and marble found near Milan, Italy. The site's biggest problem of steep access was turned into an advantage as residents and guests descend from the street through the trees overlooking the Bay. Construction cost was $950,000 for 4,250 square feet and took 12 months. After living in the house for two years, Legacy Builders sold it for $2,590,000 which was the highest price in Sausalito for a house without a San Francisco view.
